title: Create Apps Using the Workday Extend Plugin for IntelliJ
layout: subsection
---

### Prerequisites

- Workday Extend Plugin for IntelliJ.
- Account on a WCP Development tenant.

### Context

Create a custom app using IntelliJ and the Workday Extend Plugin for IntelliJ. Use the Workday Extend Plugin for IntelliJ to code presentation, site, and app metadata files. After you've coded your app, upload it to App Hub and deploy it to a Development tenant to test it.

The Reference ID of an App

The reference ID of an app follows this naming convention: `<appId>_<companySuffix>`, where:

- `<appId>` - The ID entered when creating the app with the Workday Extend Plugin for IntelliJ. This ID must:

    - Be unique within the company.
    - Be meaningful and easily identifiable across Workday Extend tools and logs.
    - Begin with a letter.
    - Use `a–z`, `A-Z`, `0–9`, `.`, or `-`.

- `<companySuffix>` - A unique ID for your company.

After you create your app and upload it to App Hub, App Hub automatically appends the `<companySuffix>` to the `<appId>` to create the unique reference ID of your app. Example: `myWcpApp_zsttxv`.

Note: You can't reuse the Reference ID of an app, even if you delete the app from the Workday Developer Site.

### Steps

1. Open IntelliJ.
2. Select Tools > Workday Extend > Log in to Workday Extend.

Enter your Workday Developer Site credentials on the browser.

3. In IntelliJ, select Tools > Workday Extend > Log in to Tenant.

Select a tenant, and enter your tenant credentials on the browser.

4. If you don't have an existing project in IntelliJ, select File > New > Project...

On the New Project window, select Workday.

5. If you're creating a new project, skip this step. Otherwise, open your existing project, and select File > New > Workday Extend > Create New App.

Alternatively, right-click the `apps` folder, and select New > Create New App.

6. Select 1 of these options:

    Option

    Description

New Blank App

Creates a default app with a simple home page.

Import from App Hub

Creates a new app by importing an app from App Hub. You can select an existing app you have access to in App Hub.

From Local File

Creates a new app by importing an app from a folder or a
.zip
file containing a Workday Extend app.

7. Enter the app information:

App Name

The display name of your app.

Reference Id

The unique identifier of your app within your company.
Enter a meaningful ID that makes it easy to identify your app across Workday Extend tools and logs. Begin the ID with a letter, and only use
a–z
,
A-Z
,
0–9
,
.
, or
-
.

App Description

Optional description.

8. If you created the app in an existing project, skip this step. If you're creating a new project, enter the IntelliJ project name and location.

    Example: WorkdayApps.

9. Click Finish.

### Result

The Workday Extend Plugin for IntelliJ adds a new subfolder for your new app under the `apps` folder. The App Metadata (AMD) and Site Metadata (SMD) files use the Reference ID you provided.

### Next Steps

- Upload your app to App Hub, and deploy it to the Development tenant.

Note: When you upload your app to App Hub, it updates the Reference ID with the appended company suffix. The Workday Extend Plugin for IntelliJ will update the Reference ID in the app folder name and files.

- Add widgets and pages to your app.

To add a new page, right-click the `presentation` folder in your app, and select New > Presentation Component > Pmd File. Enter the `id` of the new page.

The Workday Extend Plugin for IntelliJ creates a default PMD file, and adds a task in the `tasks[]` section of the AMD. The default `routingPattern` is the page `id`. If you need to customize the routing pattern of the page in the app URL, you can override the default `routingPattern` in the AMD.
