## <a id="section_errorFromInboundEndpoints"></a>Displaying Error Messages from Inbound Endpoints

You can specify a separate `responseErrorDetail` for each inbound endpoint in `endPoints[]`. An inbound endpoint that returns an HTTP response code other than 2xx triggers the page to display the error messages. Specify the `errorSummary` attribute based on the response object returned by the endpoint. `errorSummary` is a string binding of the field in the response object that contains the summary of the error.

This snippet is a sample error object returned by the Workday REST APIs:

```
{
  "error": "An error summary.",
  "errors": [
    {
      "error": "An error message detail.",
      "code": "S21"
    }
  ]
}
```

This sample `responseErrorDetail` includes the error details in the `errorSummary` value:

```
"responseErrorDetail": {
  "errorSummary": "<% [error].addAll(errors.map(e => {e.error})).join('\\n') %>"
}
```

<b>Note:</b> You can only specify `errorSummary` in `responseErrorDetail` for inbound endpoints. `responseErrorDetail` in `endPoints[]` currently doesn't support the `errors` attribute.

If your endpoint calls a third-party service, specify the summary from its error response object accordingly.

You can use the `errorMessage` app variable to display the content of `errorSummary`.

## <a id="section_errorFromOutboundEndpoints"></a>Displaying Error Messages from Outbound Endpoints

You can specify only 1 `responseErrorDetail` for all outbound endpoints in `outboundEndPoints[]`. An outbound endpoint or validation endpoint that returns an HTTP response code other than 2xx triggers the page to display the error messages. Specify these attributes based on the response object returned by the endpoint:

- `errorSummary` - A string binding of the field in the response object that contains the summary of the error.
- `errors` - A list binding of the error detail collection.

For each outbound endpoint in `outboundEndPoints[]`, specify the `failOnStatusCodes[]` with the non-2xx error codes you want to catch that are not in the default list of failure status codes:

-   301 - Moved permanently.
-   302 - Found.
-   303 - See other.
-   307 - Temporary redirect.
-   401 - Unauthorized.
-   404 - Not found.
-   407 - Proxy authentication required.
-   408 - Request timeout.
-   500 - Internal server error.
-   503 - Service unavailable.

This snippet is a sample error object returned by the Workday REST APIs:

```
{
  "error": "An error summary.",
  "errors": [
    {
      "error": "An error message detail.",
      "code": "S21"
    },
    {
      "error": "Another error message detail.",
      "code": "A21"
    }
  ]
}
```

This sample `outboundData` snippet contains `responseErrorDetail` that specifies the error summary and detailed errors from the sample error object. This example also includes a sample outbound endpoint with the `failOnStatusCodes`.

```
"outboundData": {
  "responseErrorDetail": {
  "errorSummary": "<% error %>",
  "errors": "<% errors.map(item => {item.error}) %>"
  },
  "outboundEndPoints": [
  {
    "name": "createSampleObject",
    "authType": "sso",
    "baseUrlType": "WORKDAY-APP",
    "url": "/sampleObjects",
    "httpMethod": "POST",
    "failOnStatusCodes": [
      {
        "code": 400
      },
      {
        "code": 403
      }
    ]
  }
 ]
}
```

If your endpoint calls a third-party service, specify the fields from its error response object accordingly.

You can use the `errorMessage` app variable to display the content of `errorSummary`.
