  Concept: Update Workday Extend Apps
layout: subsection
---

To update a Workday Extend app that's in use on your Production tenant:

1. Download the app from App Hub.
2. Update the source code of the app.

When you upload the updated source code to App Hub, we compile a new build of the app. To access the new Development version of the app, deploy the new build of the app to your Development tenant. Only the pre-existing version of the app is available on your Implementation, Sandbox, and Production tenants.

Example: Version 1 of your app is live in Production. You update the source code of the app, and deploy the app to a Development tenant.

<table><thead><tr><th>Environment</th><th>Version</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Development</td><td>2</td></tr><tr><td>Implementation</td><td>1</td></tr><tr><td>Sandbox</td><td>1</td></tr><tr><td>Production</td><td>1</td></tr></tbody></table><br/>

<b>Note:</b> When you deploy an app to a Development tenant, you automatically upload the app's source code to App Hub and create a new build of the app if you've modified the source code.

When you update the source code of an app version that you haven't promoted from a Development tenant, we update the existing Development version with your changes. We don't create a new version of the app.

When you're ready to test and validate your updated app in a non-Development environment:

1. Promote the app to Implementation Release to test your updated app on an Implementation tenant.

    - You don't have to reinstall the app on your Implementation tenant.
    - Only the existing version of the app is available on your Sandbox and Production tenants.

2. Promote the app to Sandbox Release to validate your updated app on a Sandbox tenant using production data.

    - You don't have to reinstall the app on your Sandbox tenant.
    - Only the existing version of the app is available on your Production tenant.

3. Promote the app to Production Release to access and use your updated app on a Production tenant. You don't have to reinstall the app on your Production tenant.

Example: As you promote the new version of the app through all 4 promotion levels:

- A Developer can unit test the new Development version on a Development tenant.
- Quality Assurance can validate the new Implementation Release version on an Implementation tenant.
- A User Acceptance Tester can verify the new Sandbox Release version on a Sandbox tenant.
- End users can work with the existing Production Release version on a Production tenant until you promote the new Sandbox Release version to Production Release.

When you update an app with model components, you can:

- Add new model components.
- Add new fields to existing model components.
- Add new security domains to business objects.
- Add new security domains to individual fields on business objects.
- Update page routes in business processes.

<b>Note:</b> You can't remove model components that deployed in a previous version of the app.

After you update an app to the next version, you don't need to reinstall the app.

When you promote the updated app to your Implementation, Sandbox, or Production tenant, the model components deploy to the tenant as part of Workday's Weekly Service Update.

As a consequence, you must promote your app before a weekly deadline for new or updated model components to deploy to your Workday tenant. To find your promotion deadline, see [Reference: Promotion Deadlines for Apps with Model Components](/wcp_docs/giw1660842903762.html).

<b>Note:</b> Workday makes updates to your app available to your tenant immediately, except when model components are already queued to deploy to the tenant during an upcoming Weekly Service Update. In this case, Workday makes updates to your app available to your tenant after the Weekly Service Update completes.
