  Concept: map Functions
layout: subsection

<a id="section_wgq_5lq_rkb"></a>
The `map` namespace provides functions for a map, which is an unordered collection of key-value pairs. Each key in the map must be unique. Examples:

-   `{ "key1": "value1", "key2": "value2", "key3": "value3"}`
-   `{:}` (empty map)

If an instance method is available, call a map function as a method on the `Map` instance:

```
thisMap.functionName(functionParam1, functionParam2)
```

Alternatively, you can call a map function using its `map` namespace syntax, where the `Map` instance is the first parameter:

```
map:functionName(thisMap, functionParam1, functionParam2)
```
