Concept: App Retirement

Once you promote an app to an Implementation, Sandbox, or Production tenant, you can’t delete the app, but must retire the app. Retiring an app removes no-longer-needed apps from your tenant, and reclaims app entitlements for use with other apps. App retirement is available for any app created in your account. App retirement isn’t available for Built on Workday apps.

You retire apps from the highest promotion level for that app. For example, if an app is promoted to IMPL, you must retire it there.

When retiring an app, these conditions apply:

- You can reuse the name of a retired app, but you can’t reuse the reference ID of the retired app.
- You can’t unretire an app. The retirement action is irreversible.
- You can’t retire an app through the Command Line Interface (CLI). You must retire an app using the Retire App option on the action menu for the app.
- Only Company Admins can retire an app. The app retirement action is available in the app logs for 30 days. If you need it for a longer period of time, the Company Admin can download it from the Analytics page by filtering the dashboard to that specific app reference ID within the 30 days that it is available.

When an app is retired, the app no longer functions or appears in search, non-model component data (examples: Orchestrations, PMD/UI pages, etc.) no longer function, and you can no longer edit the app. These types of app data will not be usable in the tenant:

- Custom Agent Actions (remove them from every agent they're registered with)
- Model tasks in search
- Card tasks in search
- Model BPs
- Model Sub-BPs
- ISUs
- Model tasks in Related Actions
- Model tasks added onto Global > Navigation Panel
- Model tasks on Hubs
- Model tasks in Announcements
- Model tasks in Configurable Alerts
- Model tasks in Dashboards
- Model tasks in Journeys
- Model tasks on Landing Pages
- Model tasks in Profile Groups
- Model tasks in Quicklinks
- Model tasks in Shortcuts
- Model tasks in To Dos
- Tenant configurations

In addition, Workday:

- Removes the app and all of its versions from all promotion levels.
- Adds the retired app to the Retired tab in App Manager.
- Removes the retired app from the Installed or Ready to Install tab. Anyone with access to App Manager can see this new tab.
- No longer counts the app against your tenant’s entitlement usage (if the app is retired from production).
- No longer counts the app against future data GB limits if the app is retired from Production. Any previous data GB usage by this app counts.
- Keeps this data usable in your tenant:

    - Security domains.
    - Report fields, including 2-way reporting report fields.
    - Business Objects.
    - Data sources.
    - Query Indexes.
