## <a id="section_overview"></a>Overview

Extend business processes (also known as “model business processes”) are key components that manage the workflow of business tasks and the state of their target business objects for your app’s unique business needs.

Similar to Workday-delivered business processes, Extend business processes sequentially perform steps that accomplish a business task. Unlike Workday-delivered business processes, Extend business processes are created in App Builder and used only with Extend business objects.

A typical Extend business process follows a sequence of steps, generally configured around the actions users must take:

1. <b>Initiation</b>: The business process launches when an authorized initiator starts a business process to create or modify a record on a business object.
2. <b>Approval Step</b>: The business process routes the submission to a designated approver who receives an inbox item. The approver has multiple options:

    - <b>Approve</b>: Allows the business process to move forward to the next step.
    - <b>Deny</b>: Terminates the business process. The model business process remains unaffected, but the business process status changes to Denied .
    - <b>Send Back</b>: Rejects the submission but provides the initiator with the opportunity to revise and resubmit. This routes the action to a designated "Revise" page, which must update the model business object and then call the Business Process Event Steps API to return the action to the Approver.

3. <b>Action Step</b>: The action step provides an opportunity for the assigned person to enrich the business process and business object data. Example: The assigned person can perform another action or enter additional information. Each action step has a corresponding page for displaying or entering data.

## <a id="section_creating_extend_bp"></a>Creating an Extend Business Process

To create an Extend business process in App Builder, see [Add Business Processes in Visual Mode](/wcp_docs/cvo1664795778240.html).

To add a parent Workday-delivered business process to an Extend business process, see [Add Parent Business Process to Extend Subprocess](/wcp_docs/GUID-bf7ef8cb-6300-46e2-a4a2-122dba844794-enHYPHENus.html).

## <a id="section_initiating_events"></a>Initiating Extend Business Process Events

An app can initiate an Extend business process through:

- [Extend Business Process Event REST API](/wcp_docs/GUID-4b87e483-baa5-4a2a-b6df-73a5d5278259-enHYPHENus.html): When you create an Extend business process and deploy the app, Extend generates this app-specific REST API. It provides the `POST /{appId}/v1/{businessProcessName}Events` endpoint, which initiates the business process event.
- <b>Orchestrations</b>:

    - An orchestration can launch a business process when it calls a REST API that starts a business process.
    - If you want an Extend business process to be initiated by the Trigger Business Process component, select the <b>Enable for Orchestrate</b> setting on the business process configuration.
    - If you enable the <b>Enable for Orchestrate</b> setting, the orchestration pauses when the business process starts and resumes only when the Orchestration Service step configured on the business process definition resumes it.

## <a id="section_rest_apis"></a>REST APIs

Extend apps have access to these REST APIs:

- The generated app-specific [Extend Business Process Event REST API](/wcp_docs/GUID-4b87e483-baa5-4a2a-b6df-73a5d5278259-enHYPHENus.html), which initiates an Extend business process event and updates an Extend subprocess.
- The generated app-specific [Extend Business Object REST APIs](/wcp_docs/xml1559763881756.html), which display and update the target business object, as it progresses through the business process steps.
- Business Process [Events REST APIs](/wcp_docs/GUID-0df5cd55-e578-43d3-b58f-ae98825d1df0-enHYPHENus.html), which access information about the overall business process.
- Business Process [Event Steps REST APIs](/wcp_docs/GUID-94cb4185-fabd-4dd5-b391-6aefe9672e32-enHYPHENus.html), which submit the business process steps.
