### Prerequisites

Create an app.

### Context

You can have your app automatically display text in the language specified by a user's Preferred Display Language setting. To enable translation, you provide a label for each piece of text, and a translation for each label in each of your target languages.

### Steps

1. In App Builder, select<b>App Configurations</b> and open your app's Site Metadata (SMD) file. The `languages` array contains an item for your locale's default [language code](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Language_localisation#Language_tags_and_codes). Example: `en-US`. To enable label translation, add an item for each target language to the array.
2. Select <b>Page Configurations</b> &gt; <b>Translations</b>. Add a <b>Translations</b> component for your local language. Name the component using the locale code for that language. Example: `es-ES`.
3. In the code editor, add a line for each label you want to translate. Use the format `key=string` where `key` is a label and `string` is the text in your local language. Example: `firstName=First Name`.
4. Add a <b>Translations</b> component for each target language. Name the component using the locale code for that language. Example: `fr-FR`.
5. In the code editor, add a line for each label you want to translate. Use the format `key=string` where `key` is a label and `string` is the text in the target language. Example: `firstName=Prénom`.

To add non-Latin characters, use an online Unicode converter to find the Java/JS/C version of the appropriate code. Enter that code in place of the `string`. Example: `home=\u5BB6`.

6. In your app's Page (PMD) files, reference a translation item using the format `<% presentationLabels.key %>`, where `key` is the label you provided for the relevant text. Example:`<% presentationLabels.firstName %>` displays 'First Name' when a user's  Preferred Display Language is `en-US` and 'Prénom' when their Preferred Language Display is `fr-FR`.
