Concept: Extend Subprocess Step Routing
layout: subsection
---

When you initiate an Extend subprocess, the event target is the parent business process event, and Workday routes the initiation step according to the parent business process event target.

Example: If the parent business process is Create Position, the event target is a supervisory organization. Therefore, you can configure a role based security group on the security policy of the Extend subprocess initiation action. However, if you configure the Employee as Self security group on the Extend subprocess initiation action, the step will be unassigned, as you can’t apply Self-Service security group types to supervisory organizations.

To view the security context of a business process event, select Business Process > View Security as a related action from the business process event. This task is secured by the Business Process Administration domain in the System functional area.

After the initiation step of the Extend subprocess is submitted, the event target will be an instance of an Extend business object. The remainder of the steps in the Extend subprocess will be routed as they would be if the Extend business process was a standalone business process. The steps are routed according to the security on the Extend business object instance, as that is the event target in the remaining steps of the business process.

Example: After the subprocess initiation step is submitted, the security groups configured on the remaining steps of the Extend business process definition will be based on the context of the event target Extend business object instance.

Note: Once you promote an app with an Extend subprocess from a WCP Development tenant, you can't remove the Extend subprocess from its parent business process. However, if you don't want the Extend subprocess to be part of the parent business process, you can simply remove the step from the parent business process definition.
