title: Set Up System User Accounts for WDCLI for Extend Apps
layout: subsection
---

### Prerequisites

Ensure that you’re logged into Developer Site as an Admin role.

### Context

System User accounts enable applications and services to log in to WDCLI without sharing a human user’s user IDs and credentials. System user accounts can’t access or execute tenant-level operations such as deploying an app, which still requires signing in with tenant credentials. System user accounts are specific to a unique organization and can't be used across multiple organizations.

### Steps

1. Navigate to the Users tab on the Developer Site console.
2. Click Add a User.

    The Add User dialog displays.

3. From the Company Role drop-down, select System User.
4. Populate the remaining fields.

Note: If you leave the Company Email field empty, Workday generates an email address automatically for the System User. The email does not have to exist, but it must be unique and in a valid format. No emails will be sent to this email address.

5. Save the Client ID and Client Secret values for future use.
6. Set up the WDCLI_CLIENT_ID environment variable:
    - For macOS and Linux: `export WDCLI_CLIENT_ID=[CLIENT_ID]`
    - For Windows: `$env:WDCLI_CLIENT_ID="CLIENT_ID"`

7. Set up the WDCLI_CLIENT_SECRET environment variable:
    - macOS and Linux: `export WDCLI_CLIENT_SECRET=[CLIENT_SECRET]`
    - Windows: `$env:WDCLI_CLIENT_SECRET="CLIENT_SECRET"`

### Next Steps

The WDCLI command to login as System User is: `wdcli auth login --system-user`.
