Concept: Built on Workday Apps for Integrations
layout: subsection
---

You can create apps in Workday Extend and Workday Orchestrate for Integrations and distribute them to multiple customers. While you can distribute your apps to many customers, you retain control over versioning and maintenance of the distributed apps.

## Built on Workday Apps Overview

Built on Workday provides a framework to enable you to build and manage Workday apps at scale across multiple tenants. You can create a single app and license it for use by multiple customers. Customers don't need the Extend SKU to purchase and install a Built on Workday App.

- You can include Extend Pro features in a Built on Workday App for customers that use API Gateway. Built on Workday doesn't support the Native Extend implementation AWS feature.
- Customers can only access a Built on Workday App when it's at Released promotion level.
- Once you've released a Built on Workday App, you can make (nonbreaking) changes to it. Customers receive the changes automatically.
- Built on Workday Apps don't count towards the Extend app allotment entitlement.

- Producer

An organization (typically a Workday Partner) that wants to create apps for sale to other organizations.

- Customer

Usually an entity that has purchased an app from a producer. The customer can't edit any purchased apps.

- License

An authentication that enables a customer to install a purchased app. Workday doesn't require additional Workday licenses to license an app.

- App Reviewer

A Workday entity that reviews and certifies an app. Producers can distribute apps only after approval by Workday.

If an app is in aReview state, and the producer makes changes, the app reverts toIn Development. Then, resubmit the app for another review.

- Approve/Approved

A state where Workday has approved an app for distribution to customers. Approved status applies to new apps; Workday doesn't recertify updated apps. Approval expires after 1 year.

If you make changes to an app, the app reverts to In Development under these conditions:

    - The app is in Approved status.
    - You've never promoted the app past Development.

The producer then needs to resubmit the app for approval.

- Semantic Versioning

Producers can apply major and minor versions to new and updated apps. When producers apply changes to their copy of an app, customers receive the update automatically.

    - You set the major version the first time that you promote the app past Development. Major versions are breaking changes, and Built on Workday doesn't permit these changes after initial promotion. Therefore, you can't set another major version for the Built on Workday App.
    - You set the minor version with each promotion after the initial promotion.

- Release Notes

Built on Workday requires release notes for any major and minor version release for your app. Customers can view release notes in places where they view the Built on Workday app, such as App Manager and the Developer Site.
